I love music
and I particularly enjoy Christian music.
Gospel, contemporary, praise or worship, it doesn’t matter. I enjoy
feeding my spirit with uplifting and encouraging music that allows me to raise
my voice in praise to my savior. But, recently I have heard two different Christian
songs by an artist that I really enjoy listening to that have caused me to stop
and think about a few things, because while the songs are fun and cries out to
God, I do not believe they have much basis in scripture. It causes me some concern because these songs
have been borne out of church teachings.
The lyrics go like this:
"If it’s true you use broken things,
then I’m all yours!”
“I see wounded; You see mended!”
I won’t go
into who the artist is, but I will say when I heard these songs it caught in my
spirit and I thought, “Wait a minute, my bible says He makes all things new.”
2
Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold,
all things have become new.
Please note
in the verse 17 that Paul said if anyone is IN Christ..so this has to be a post
salvation message, right? If we are in
Christ, then we are new creations. God
said in Isaiah:
Isaiah 43:18-19 "Do not remember
the former things, Nor consider the things of old. (19) Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it
shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the
wilderness And rivers in the desert.
So what are
the things of old that we do not consider, or that would keep us from
recognizing the new things God is doing in us, for us, with us, and through
us?
Colossians 3:8-10 But now you yourselves
are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out
of your mouth. (9) Do not lie to
one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, (10) and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to
the image of Him who created him,
Colossians 3:1-3 If then you were raised
with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the
right hand of God. (2) Set your
mind on things above, not on things on the earth. (3) For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in
God.
Our lives
are no longer our own and we are no longer held by chains of sin and
death. We are free in Christ, the Spirit
of the One who raised Christ from the dead lives in us. And our responsibility in this case is to
make sure our minds are centered and focused on the One who causes us to
overcome and gives us the victory over our enemies. When we remain focused on
our sinful past, our thoughts can stay in places that prevent us from being
victorious, but instead keep us victims and prisoners in our suffering. Taking our thoughts captive and placing them
under the subjection of Jesus Christ is one of the hardest things we can do as
a Christian, in my opinion. Satan enjoys
wrapping us in condemnation, shame, guilt, hatred, malice, and all of the other
emotions we let sit and simmer in our minds.
We become distracted and ineffective in our walks with Christ. We lay down the weapons available to us for
coming against these things. Jesus said this:
Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, "If
anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross
daily, and follow Me.
In other
words, the fight is not One and Done. It
is an ongoing, continual, daily process of crucifying the natural, human part
of us and following Jesus. You cannot follow
someone if you are not looking ahead at them.
If you are focused somewhere else instead of the leadership of Jesus
Christ, then you will not remain on the path that He is taking you down. So remember,
Ephesians 4:17-24 This I say, therefore,
and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the
Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, (18)
having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God,
because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their
heart; (19) who, being past
feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with
greediness. (20) But you have
not so learned Christ, (21) if
indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in
Jesus: (22) that you put off,
concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to
the deceitful lusts, (23) and be
renewed in the spirit of your mind, (24)
and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true
righteousness and holiness.
We are NEW
creations no longer bound to our old nature!
Our old nature leads to death.
Our new nature leads to LIFE! SO,
do not be deceived by any teachings or hear anyone say, even in song lyrics,
that you are anything but a NEW CREATION in CHRIST! God doesn’t see us as mended. He sees as whole in Him. And that my friends, should bring us all joy
unspeakable and continual praise on our lips!
